MonitAir helps reduce the number and impact of exacerbations

  • a validated and CE certified solution for COPD-patients experiencing life threatening exacerbations
  • a self-learning application, based on a patented Bayesian Network computational model
  • can predict exacerbations several days before occurrence and gives patients advice on how to avoid or lessen the impact of an exacerbation

A self-learning application

MonitAir offers a validated and CE certified solution for COPD-patients experiencing life threatening exacerbations. We developed a self-learning application, based on a patented Bayesian Network computational model, which can be used on smartphone or tablet. MonitAir can predict exacerbations several days before occurrence and gives patients advice on how to avoid or lessen the impact of an exacerbation. The measures have been predefined with their practitioner; such as medication, specific breathing exercises or a doctor’s consult.

Patients are asked to enter data on a regular bases:

  • The amount of air one can breathe out in one forced breath measured by a spirometer
  • Oxygen saturation measured by a pulse oximeter
  • Body temperature
  • A yes or no questionnaire

Control COPD

MonitAir gives patients control over their COPD and reduces fear of exacerbations. Patients using MonitAir experience more freedom in day-to-day life. They are less afraid of physical exercise, resulting in better general health and improved lung condition.

COPD is a common chronic lung condition that affects the ability of the lungs to take up oxygen, resulting in symptoms such as breathlessness and coughing. During a so-called lung attack/exacerbation – a moment when the disease flares up – these symptoms get worse.

Lung attacks have a severe effect on the quality of life; they can cause hospitalisation and a rapid decline of lung functioning. The way patients experience the severeness and symptoms differ per person.

A growing number of adults suffer from COPD and its consequences. At the moment approximately 10% of adults worldwide are diagnosed with COPD. One third of these patients experience annual lung attacks. In a few years COPD will be the third cause of death in the Western world, right after cancer and vascular diseases.

About MonitAir

Since 2010 we have developed, validated and tested the effects of the MonitAir app with patients of the Dutch Lung Foundation, doctors at the Radboud University Medical Centre, researchers at Radboud University and Apps4Air and Topicus BV.

First patients and doctors determined the causes for an exacerbation. Then researchers used artificial intelligence to develop a computational model that uses these causes to predict the probability of a lung attack. To test the reliability of the prediction we used data of earlier scientific research from all over the world and newly collected patient data on lung attacks. After that the computational model has been linked to ways of treatment defined by general practitioners, lung specialists, nurses and psychologists. These two have been combined in an app that has recently been tested for its affectability in a study with COPD patients
